Former director general of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority violated law – ethics watchdogs

The Chief Official Ethics Commission (VTEK) has concluded that Arvydas Vaitkus, former director general of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, violated the Law on the Adjustment of Public and Private Interests in the Civil Service.

The VTEK ruled that when Vaitkus ran for the mayor of Klaipėda he did not declare all of the donors of his list of candidates.

Vaitkus called the VTEK's decision absurd and claimed that it was part of continuing crackdown against him and that there were serious problems with justice in Lithuania.

The public broadcaster earlier reported that companies operating in Klaipėda seaport supported Vaitkus' election campaign. He ran for Klaipėda mayor as the candidate of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS) but was not elected.

Minister of Transport and Communications Rokas Masiulis dismissed Vaitkus from heading the port arguing that he could no longer be objective in terms of companies operating there. Vaitkus appealed against the decision but a court rejected his appeal.
